YCTEEN ESSAY CONTEST

YCteen is written by a staff of teen writers who work in our New York City newsroom. Write four or five paragraphs about a staff who believed in you, listened to you, advocated for you, gave you great advice, who in any way made your life better. Essays will be edited for length and clarity. When someone’s actions hurt others, they should be held accountable. The Heart Knows Something Different: Your stories will be published in one of Youth Communication’s two award-winning magazines: Letters may be edited by Youth Communication editors for brevity and clarity.

Participate in writing lessons and group activities exploring your own experiences with injustice and how to address it. YCteen publishes true stories by teens, giving readers insight into the issues that matter most in young people’s lives. If you disagree with the writer, explain why you think differently or how you might have handled the situation.

Start your letter with “Dear [writer’s name]” and reference the article by the title. Several of the books include leader guides with extensive lessons. This is an opportunity to express your opinion or present your own point of view on esasy story you’ve read. You may also submit your essay by mail, fax, or email.

YCteen writers get published online and in a print magazine that’s distributed to hundreds of high schools, libraries, and community-based organizations in New York City. When someone’s actions hurt others, they should be held accountable. You must be 21 or under to enter.

A network of more than teachers and other staff distribute the magazine at more than public high schools, libraries, and community-based organizations. You may only enter the essay contest if you live in a group home, juvenile detention center, or with a foster family; or if you used to be in foster care. Represent is a magazine written by and for young people in foster care.
